Q1. Why do I have spider veins and varicose veins?
Spider veins and varicose veins are essentially dilated blood vessels with excessive blood accumulation. The most significant difference between them is that spider veins don’t protrude from the skin’s surface because they’re not as dilated as varicose veins. Meanwhile, varicose veins bulge out of the skin’s surface, often looking like dense ropes of twisted, tangled, and knotted veins.
Spider veins and varicose veins are usually caused by venous insufficiency, a dangerous circulatory disorder wherein the collapse of your vein valves makes blood accumulate in your leg veins. These vein valves are generally responsible for smooth one-way blood circulation to the heart. When they collapse, blood flows backward due to gravity and pools in the leg veins.
Q2. Is restless leg syndrome also caused by vein disease?
Restless leg syndrome can be caused by various underlying diseases. However, venous insufficiency is one of the most common causes of restless leg syndrome. As blood accumulates in your leg veins, you develop an intense desire to move your legs constantly to encourage blood circulation, resulting in restless legs. One important distinguishing feature for restless legs caused by vein disease is that it worsens at the end of the day or after long periods of sitting and standing still.
Q3. What are the other symptoms of vein disease?
Besides restless leg syndrome, other early symptoms of vein disease include leg heaviness, throbbing leg veins, leg pain, leg swelling, and frequent leg cramps. If left untreated, the continued accumulation of blood in your leg veins may also lead to skin disease, skin discoloration, leg ulcers (non-healing wounds), and deep vein thrombosis.
Q4. Will I need surgical treatment for spider veins and varicose veins?
No, you don’t need surgical treatments for varicose veins and spider veins. In fact, you should actively avoid vein clinics offering surgical treatments instead of minimally invasive procedures. Vascular surgery has been deemed obsolete and needlessly risky for well over a decade. Minimally invasive treatments, in comparison, are far safer, more effective, and more convenient.

Q5. What can I expect from the varicose vein treatment process?
Vein Treatment Clinic has a unique and personalized varicose vein treatment process. Instead of providing a cookie-cutter treatment template, we understand your unique concerns and the root cause of your vein problems to curate the ideal vein treatment. The following is a step-by-step overview of what you can expect from the varicose vein treatment process from our vein doctors.
Step 1: Consultation
The vein doctor examines your leg veins and identifies the symptoms of vein disease, such as restless leg syndrome, spider veins, varicose veins, leg heaviness, throbbing leg veins, frequent leg cramps, leg pain, etc.
Step 2: Diagnosis
The vein doctor administers vascular imaging tests, known as duplex ultrasound, to visualize the blood flow in your leg veins. If you have underlying venous insufficiency, your blood will flow backward and accumulate in your legs, which will be visible on the computer screen.
Step 3: Vein Treatment
The vein doctor will recommend radiofrequency ablation, endovenous laser ablation, or VenaSeal for the underlying vein disease. They’ll deliver thermal energy, laser energy, or medical adhesives into the diseased vein to collapse its walls, rerouting the accumulated blood to healthier leg veins.
Step 4: Cosmetic Treatment
The vein doctor will recommend sclerotherapy for the visible spider veins. They’ll inject a medicine called sclerosant into the spider veins to fuse their walls, turning them into hardened scar tissues that eventually get absorbed by the body. Over time, the spider veins will fade away from the skin’s surface.
Step 5: Recovery
The vein doctor will discuss your recovery process — there’s not much to it; you’ll have to wear compression stockings for a few weeks and avoid strenuous workouts for a few days. You can resume most of your daily activities immediately.
Q7. Will my insurance plans cover vein treatment?
VTC Houston accepts most insurance plans, including Medicare. And your insurance plan will likely cover a part of your varicose vein treatment if you have underlying venous insufficiency. However, you can’t get insurance coverage for cosmetic treatments, like sclerotherapy, if you don’t have underlying vein disease.
